Types of Flooring
Hardwood flooring is any flooring product that has been manufactured from timber and is constructed of planks. It has long been a popular flooring choice because it’s easy to maintain and can handle a heavy flow of foot traffic thanks to its strength and durability. Hardwood flooring also comes in many colours, styles, stains, cuts, and species so it can uniquely complement any space. Hardwood flooring makes a great long-term investment because it allows for better acoustics and improved indoor air quality.
Engineered hardwood flooring is typically constructed of two or more layers. It’s usually pre-finished and has bevelled edges to give you the look of hardwood flooring at a cheaper cost. While it may look just like real hardwood, it won’t expand or contract the way real hardwood would. Engineered hardwood flooring is durable and can still come in a variety of species, grades, and finishes to achieve whatever look fits your space.
Laminate flooring is also used to mimic hardwood flooring, as well as stone. Laminate wood flooring is created by pressing together composite wood at high temperatures to create an image of the hardwood that can then be placed over the composite wood. Laminate flooring is durable and easy to maintain and can usually be installed at a fraction of the cost of hardwood flooring, though some may not find it quite as aesthetically pleasing.
Vinyl flooring (or vinyl composition tile) is another synthetic flooring option that is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its durability and resistance to water and stains. Not only is it a cost-effective choice, but it can withstand heavy amounts of foot traffic and comes in a variety of colours and patterns to match just about any décor. However, vinyl flooring can fade if exposed to too much sunlight and can be damaged by extreme temperatures, heavy loads, and sharp objects. Vinyl flooring is easy to maintain and replace when damaged.
Because cork is a natural, renewable material, cork flooring is actually a greener alternative to other types of flooring. Naturally resistant to mould, mildew, and termites, cork flooring will not negatively impact your indoor air quality. It’s also fire-resistant and very durable, while still maintaining an aesthetically pleasing look in many styles, colours, and sizes. And because cork “gives in” when it’s compressed, it provides a unique cushion when you walk over a cork floor that makes it feel more comfortable than many of the alternatives. However, cork flooring can be damaged by sharp objects, heavy loads, water, and sunlight.
Styles of Flooring
Hardwood flooring is typically installed while unfinished and then stained and finished on-site. However, pre-finished flooring is a game-changer. Because pre-finished flooring products arrive already finished, they’re much easier and quicker to install. Because the finish treatments are done by the manufacturer, they’re often stronger to offer more durability and resistance to stains, discolourations, and water. As a result, pre-finished floors tend to be easier to maintain, although they’re often more difficult to refinish and/or repair.
While many know about the advantages of installing hardwood flooring, few realize that hardwood floors can actually be installed at a 45-degree angle to help highlight a specific area. With 45-degree flooring, your floor’s wooden boards are placed parallel to each other and then laid down at a 45-degree angle to the room’s walls. Why would someone do such a thing? Well, this method of installation can help create the illusion of a bigger space because the eyes are naturally drawn to the corners of a room with 45-degree angle hardwood floors. However, this type of flooring installation requires you to purchase excess flooring products that won’t be used because it has to be cut and thrown away in order to achieve the angled look. Wrong measurements can also lead to more wastes, so this type of flooring usually requires more time and precision than others.
Herringbone flooring also requires more installation time than many other flooring types because its layout is achieved through a unique zig-zag pattern that is either parallel or diagonal to the wall. Made popular in Europe, it can be installed piece-by-piece in several types of configurations either with or without a border. This type of flooring also requires much precision with measurements and will produce some excess wastes that can’t be used, though typically not as much wastes as with 45-degree angle flooring.
Unique Hardwood Flooring is also capable of installing borders to help you make the most of your flooring choice. Hardwood floor borders are used to complement simple to intricate hardwood flooring installations.
Having wood walls can be very relaxing and inviting in any space. They can help you create a minimalist or classic design, as well as help you connect with nature by emphasizing the natural beauty of the outdoors. If you’re ready to take the creative plunge, we’re capable of installing wood walls of any species, colour, style, or size.
While pre-finished flooring has already been finished by the manufacturer before it arrives, other types of wooden flooring will require site finishing to ensure their protection. When your flooring is sanded and finished on-site, it presents a smoother surface without the appearance of any bevels or grooves. As a result, they’re actually easier to maintain because dust and dirt won’t get stuck in all of those grooves. You also have a lot more ways to customize your flooring with various stains, inlays, borders, and patterns.
